Standard Bass tuning

StringNoteFrequency
4 (lowest, E)E141.20 Hz
3 (A)A155.00 Hz
2 (D)D273.42 Hz
1 (highest, G)G298.00 Hz

● Low frequencies take a moment longer to register — let each note ring for a second or two before reading the display.

● A quiet room matters more on bass; low-end rumble from fans or traffic can confuse pitch detection.

● For 5-string (low B) or 6-string (low B, high C) basses, install the Watar app — the browser tuner here is tuned for standard 4-string EADG.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard bass guitar tuning?
Standard 4-string bass tuning, low to high, is E1 A1 D2 G2 — one octave below a guitar's four lowest strings.
What about 5-string bass?
5-string basses typically add a low B below E (B0), or occasionally a high C above G. The Watar app includes 5 and 6-string presets.
Why is my bass harder to tune than my guitar?
Lower fundamental frequencies have longer wave periods, so pitch detection needs a slightly longer, cleaner sample — let the note sustain and keep background noise low.
