● Tune the A string first against a reference, then tune the others relative to it using the fifths between adjacent strings.

● Turn pegs slowly — violin pegs can slip or stick; fine tuners on the tailpiece give finer control for small adjustments.

● Bow each string individually rather than plucking for the steadiest pitch reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard violin tuning?
Standard violin tuning, low to high, is G3 D4 A4 E5 — each string a perfect fifth above the last.
Why does my violin go out of tune so quickly?
New strings, temperature and humidity changes, and loose pegs are the most common causes. It's normal to check tuning before every practice session.
Is 440 Hz always correct for A?
440 Hz (A4) is the modern standard, but some orchestras tune to 442 Hz. The Watar app lets you switch the reference pitch between 440, 442, 432, and 415 Hz.
